A Secluded Beach In The Middle Of Sydney - Washaway Beach

What better way to spend Summer than at the beach. It's just a shame that everyone else had the same idea! There's a beach in Sydney, where as long as you're okay with nudity, is Sydney's best beach.

Washaway Beach

You won't find too many pictures of this beach here, as it's a bit tricky to take photo's of this beach without committing a crime. Washaway Beach combines all of my favourite outdoor activities, a little hike to the beach, a little rock climb down, and being naked!

It's not just those things that make this beach one of my favourites. The huge rock faces that surround the beach provide amazing shade. The water is so clear and blue, and the sand is soft and golden.

Due to all of those factors, this leaves this Sydney beach almost empty, even on the hottest of days.

Getting There

Washaway Beach is located in Clontarf. There is street parking available at the end of Barrabooka Street. The very popular Castle Rock Beach is around the corner, so on weekends it can be tricky finding a parking spot close to where the trail starts.

Follow the trail that starts at the end of Barrabooka Street. You will encounter your first crossroads of the walk. Do not turn left, or right here, continue straight (sort of more of a diagonal).

Once you're on the trail down keep an eye out on the left of the walk. The trail to Washaway Beach is quite covered up and can be tricky to spot. If the walk starts to get steep and you can't see the beach in front of you, you've gone past the entry for Washaway Beach.

Follow the track and you will see Washaway Beach beneath you. This is where the rock climbing starts!

You will need to climb down a rockface to reach the beach, but after the climb you've made it to Washaway Beach!

Know Before You Go

  • This is a nudist beach, people will be naked

  • There is no water or food available, make sure you pack your own

  • There are no toilets available

  • Rock climbing is necessary for this walk, do not visit this beach if you have mobility issues

  • UV in Australia is extreme, make sure you wear sunscreen

I would like to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of this land and pay my respects to the Elders both past and present.
