Searching For Sydney's Best Cat Café. My Time At Yumiao Cat Café

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Sydney has Cat Cafes popping up left, right, and centre. For an experience you could once only hope to find overseas, Sydney now has a decent amount of Cat Cafés .

Continuing our journey on finding out which Cat Café in Sydney is the best, we head on in to Yumiao Cat Café.

Yumiao Cat Café

Sitting on a busy road in the town of Waterloo just outside of Sydney, you'll find Yumiao Cat Café. It's a small shop centred between other local shops.

Yumiao claim to be "Sydney's Biggest Cat Café", whether that means how many cats they have, or how many visitors they get, I'm not too sure.

The Cats

Stepping into Yumiao you are greeted at the door by the manager, Garlic. She's a sweet girl who makes sure the shop front is in order. Hearing that they boast a massive 19 cat roster, I was excited to interact with so many cats. Unfortunately, most of the cats were asleep when we went. It feels odd to complain about sleeping cats, with 3 of my own I definitely know how much they sleep, but surely with that many cats you'd have a lot more interaction. The cats that were awake were skittish, and there was one altercation between another cat and Jojo, who is a bit of a menace in the club.

The cats were your usual domestic breeds, with a couple of Persians being their most unique breeds.

The Café

This was a "drinks only" Café, with a nice menu of drinks. One free drink is included in the entry price. Our drinks were delivered to us in the play area and we were able to sit down to enjoy our drinks.

The entry area has limited seating so you can grab a drink, and watch the cats through the window.

During our hour here I saw one guest come and grab a drink from the café, so I wouldn't say that this is the local spot that people grab their coffees from.

So... Is It Worth Visiting Yumiao Cat Cafe

Ehhh.

This wouldn't be the cat café that I would recommend.

The layout of the play area is an L shape, which made it quite hard to get past people. They also had seating in the play area, but underneath the seats would be water bowls and Feliway plugged in, so although there is seating, it was very awkward to sit comfortably.

Garlic was my favourite part about my visit, and she sits out the front; so after greeting her that was the last interaction we had with her.
